Bala and Ram Jakhu Grant

Grant Information:

We are honoured to announce The Bala and Ram Jakhu Grant to celebrate the life, work, and achievements of Mrs. Brij Bala Jakhu and Dr. Ram S. Jakhu.

Commencing in 2017, KEATCA through its endowment set up at the VanCity Community Foundation (VCF) in Vancouver commits to an annual grant of $5000.00 Canadian for the next ten years.

Priority will be given to students enrolled at the institute of Air and Space Law, McGill University in Montreal, where Dr. Jakhu has spent a major part of his career. If, however, no student applies or meets the financial criteria of our grants, the special selection committee for this award is free to consider other candidates.


Prof. Dr. Ram S. JakhuCurrently Prof. Dr. Ram S. Jakhu is tenured Associate Professor at the Institute of Air and Space Law, Faculty of Law, McGill University, Montreal, Canada. He teaches (mainly at graduate level) and conducts advanced research in international space law, law of space applications, law of space commercialization, space security, national regulation of space activities, and public international law.

In addition to his extensive academic experience of over thirty years in the field of international and national Space Law and Policy, he has been providing consultation to several private and governmental entities and drafting national laws and regulations in various countries. For the last ten years, he has been spearheading the world’s most extensive and multi-million-dollar academic Space Law-related research and outreach program (about $5 million). Currently, he is the Project Director of an international research for drafting McGill Manual on International Law Applicable to Military Uses of Outer Space (MILAMOS).

Ram Jakhu authored three books, over 100 articles, 20 research reports and edited 9 books, including the one that received the 2011 Book Award from the International Academy of Astronautics.

In 2016, Ram Jakhu received the "Leonardo da Vinci Life-Long Achievement Award" from the International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety and in 2007 the "Distinguished Service Award" from International Institute of Space Law for significant contribution to the development of Space Law.

Over the last 50 years, Ram Jakhu has been very active in the service of the community at large, both in India (helping the poor and the youth) and in Canada (promoting the integration of new immigrants in the Canadian society in Vancouver and Montreal). His community service activities have been mainly related to immigration, citizenship, employment conditions of immigrants working in B.C. farms and homes, education, human rights, etc.

Ram Jakhu holds Doctor of Civil Law (Dean's Honors List) and Master of Law (LL.M.) degrees from McGill University, Canada, as well as LL.M., LL.B., and B.A. degrees from Panjab University, India.
